The air duct cleaning cost calculator estimates what duct cleaning is likely to cost for your home. You can price the job from the home’s size in square feet or from the total number of vents and returns. The calculator then adjusts for building type, your state, and whether the home has a smoking household. Thumbtack’s public cost guide puts typical US prices at $225 to $619, with most people paying about $374. The tool is free, runs in your browser, and needs no account or sign-up. Use the estimate to set a budget before you request quotes, or to check a quote you already have. It is an estimate, not a local price, so the company’s written quote is what you will pay.

The estimate assumes a typical job for the home you describe. A quote for a very different system may come in outside the range shown.

How to use the Air duct cleaning cost calculator

  1. Under Price by, choose Home size or Number of vents, depending on which detail you know better.
  2. If you chose Home size, enter your home’s size in Home size (sq ft). The default is a 2,000 sq ft house.
  3. If you chose Number of vents, enter your total in Vents and returns.
  4. Under Building, select House, Townhome, Condo or apartment, or Business building.
  5. Under State, pick your state from the list, or leave it on “US average.”
  6. Tick Smoking household only if it applies to the home.
  7. Tick Add dryer vent cleaning in the same visit if you want that work included in the estimate.
  8. Read the price range, then check the receipt, which shows the national figures and the factors applied.

The table by home size shows how the range changes as the home gets larger. If you are not sure of your vent count, switch to Home size and compare the two results.

Your settings are kept in the page address. Press Copy link to share or bookmark the exact estimate you are looking at, or press Print to print the result. On a phone, wide tables scroll sideways inside their own box.

After you read the result, compare the price range with the figures on the receipt. The receipt lists the factors applied, so you can see whether the building or smoking setting changed the total.

How much does air duct cleaning cost?

Thumbtack’s guide puts the typical range at $225 to $619, and its ranges rise with home size. Homes under 1,000 sq ft fall between $191 and $445, while homes over 4,000 sq ft fall between $276 and $643. The calculator applies two more factors to those figures: building type and a smoking household. A condo is priced at 0.82 of a house, and a smoking household at 1.085 of a non-smoking one. For a 2,000 sq ft house in the US, the estimate is $245 to $570. For a 1,500 sq ft condo with a smoking household, it is $205 to $475.

Building type also shows up in Thumbtack’s own ranges. A townhome runs $208 to $485, a house $241 to $563, and a business building $266 to $621. Those figures are useful for checking whether a quote fits the kind of property you own.

How much does duct cleaning cost per vent?

When you price by vents, the calculator uses Thumbtack’s ranges by vent count: $164 to $383 for 1 to 5 vents, $270 to $630 for 6 to 10, and $303 to $708 for 11 to 20. The cost per vent drops as the count rises, because a single visit spreads its setup across more outlets. For 25 vents, the tool estimates $345 to $805. Divided by 25, that is about $14 to $32 per vent. Enter every vent and return you have, since each one adds to the work.

Is air duct cleaning worth it?

The US EPA says duct cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems. It suggests cleaning when there is substantial visible mold growth, vermin, or excessive dust and debris released from the vents. The calculator shows a price, not a need. Before you pay for a visit, look for those signs, and ask the company what it found and what it plans to clean.

Does a smoking household change the price?

Yes, in Thumbtack’s data. Non-smoking homes fall between $228 and $533, and smoking households between $248 and $578. The calculator applies a factor of 1.085 for a smoking household. The Smoking household box is the only control for this, so tick it only when it describes the home you are pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How often should air ducts be cleaned?

The source data does not give a set interval. The EPA’s guidance ties cleaning to visible conditions, such as mold growth, vermin, or dust released from the vents, rather than to a calendar. Check for those signs before you book a visit.

Can I add dryer vent cleaning to the same visit?

Yes. Tick Add dryer vent cleaning in the same visit and the estimate includes that work. Thumbtack’s guide cites one Denver company that charges $65 for dryer vent cleaning added to an air duct cleaning, but that is one company’s price. Ask any company for its combined price in writing.

Do air duct cleaners charge by the hour?

Thumbtack’s guide reports an average hourly rate of $40 for air duct cleaners. Ask whether a quote is by the job or by the hour, since a longer visit can change the total. The hourly figure is a national average, not a local rate.

What is the difference between Home size and Number of vents?

Home size prices the job from square footage, using Thumbtack’s ranges by home size. Number of vents prices it from the count in Vents and returns, using the ranges by vent count. Use whichever number you know more reliably, and compare both results if you are unsure.

Is anything I enter sent anywhere?

No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded. Your settings stay in the page address, so sharing the link shares them.

What are the lowest and highest prices in the guide?

Thumbtack’s guide lists a low of $109 and a high of $1,244 for air duct cleaning, with most people paying about $374. The typical range of $225 to $619 is the better figure to plan around. The extremes are useful only to show how wide the market is.
