This carpet cleaning cost calculator estimates what you might pay to have your carpets professionally cleaned. You enter the number of rooms or the carpet area in square feet, choose a cleaning method and a state, and the tool shows a price range. It is free, runs in your browser, and needs no account or sign-up.
The estimates start from national prices in Thumbtack’s public cost guide, updated March 31, 2026. That guide reports prices from jobs and quotes on its platform. Most people pay about $206, with a typical range of $147 to $288. The tool adjusts that figure for the method and state you pick. Use the result as a planning number before you ask local cleaners for quotes, since their final price depends on your home and the condition of your carpet.

How to use the Carpet cleaning cost calculator
- Open the “Price by” menu and choose Number of rooms or Square feet.
- If you chose rooms, set the Rooms count. If you chose square feet, enter the Carpet area in sq ft.
- Pick a Method: Steam (hot water extraction), Dry, or Low-moisture.
- Open the State menu and choose your state, or keep US average.
- Read the price range, then check the receipt, which lists the national figures used.
- Look at the table of average prices for 1 to 6 rooms. Your chosen row is highlighted, so you can compare it with nearby room counts.
Read the price range first, then the receipt. The receipt shows the national figure the tool started from, so you can see how your state and method moved it. In square-foot mode, a very small carpet may show the $91 minimum at both ends of the range.
The Method setting changes the price only a little. In square-foot mode, Dry multiplies the estimate by 0.974, so compare Steam and Dry with the same area to see the difference.
The tool starts with 3 rooms, steam, and US average, so you can change one setting at a time. Your settings are kept in the page address. Use “Copy link” to share or bookmark your exact estimate, or “Print” to print the result. On phones, wide tables scroll sideways inside their box.
How much does carpet cleaning cost per room?
Thumbtack’s national average is $196 for three rooms, and the average rises with each room, from $130 for one room to $342 for six rooms. The tool builds its room estimate from these averages. It sets the low end at 80% of the average for your room count and the high end at 125%. That spread is the tool’s own choice, not a figure from Thumbtack. Thumbtack’s averages describe typical jobs, so a home with heavy soiling or a large number of furnishings may fall outside the range.
For rooms above six, the tool adds $63 for each extra room. An eight-room home gives a range of $375 to $585. A three-room home at the US average gives a range of $155 to $245, so the room count matters more than the method for most homes.
How much does carpet cleaning cost per square foot?
Thumbtack’s national figures run from $0.53 to $0.98 per square foot. In square-foot mode, the tool multiplies your carpet area by those two rates to get a low and a high estimate. Small carpets have a $91 minimum, so a very small area may show that figure at both ends of the range. For a 400 sq ft carpet, the estimate is $210 to $390.
Measuring your carpet area first gives the most direct input for this mode. Measure each room’s length and width, multiply them, and add the results together. The tool then applies the rates to the total area you enter.
Is steam cleaning more expensive than dry cleaning?
Steam cleaning, also called hot water extraction, is slightly more expensive on Thumbtack’s national figures. Steam ranges from $137 to $248, and dry cleaning ranges from $133 to $242. The gap is small, which is why the tool applies a factor of 0.974 to the dry method in square-foot mode.
The method you pick is a choice about the cleaning process, not only the price. Choose the method that suits your carpet and what you want removed, then compare quotes using the same method so the numbers are comparable. Ask each cleaner which method they recommend for your carpet and how it handles stains and moisture.
Frequently asked questions
Do carpet cleaners charge for stairs?
Thumbtack notes that stairs may cost extra but does not give a figure. The tool has no stairs input, so ask the cleaner for a price before you book. Many cleaners count a staircase as a room, so ask how they count it.
How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?
The tool does not estimate cleaning frequency. Check your carpet manufacturer’s care instructions, then ask a cleaner what they recommend for your home, including traffic, pets and stains.
Is it cheaper to rent a carpet cleaner?
Renting a carpet cleaner costs about $40 a day, according to Consumer Reports as cited by Thumbtack. That is less than the typical professional range of $147 to $288, but you do the work yourself. The tool does not price rentals, so compare the rental cost with a professional estimate for your room count.
Does the State setting change my carpet cleaning cost?
Yes. The tool scales the estimate using the state median wage for cleaners from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (OEWS, May 2025), compared with the national median of $17.07 an hour. For specialty services, only the labor share of the price, assumed to be 60%, moves with wages. California’s median is $20.51 and Mississippi’s is $12.19. The result is an estimate, not a local quote.
Why is my quote different from the estimate?
Thumbtack’s figures come from jobs and quotes on its platform, and your final price depends on your home, the condition of your carpet and the cleaner’s own costs. Use the estimate to see whether a quote is in a reasonable range, then compare at least two written quotes.
