The chimney cleaning cost calculator estimates what a chimney sweep is likely to cost. Set the number of flues you need swept, choose your state, and read the price range. Flues can be fireplace, wood stove, or furnace flues, and all of them are swept in one visit. Thumbtack’s public cost guide puts the national average range at $201 to $726, with most people paying about $385. The tool is free, runs in your browser, and needs no account or sign-up. Use it to set a budget before you call a sweep, or to check a quote you already have. The result is an estimate, not a local price, so the sweep’s written quote is the number to compare.
It is most useful when you want to see the cost of more than one flue before you call a sweep.

How to use the chimney cleaning cost calculator
- Set the Flues control to the number of flues you need swept. The default is 1. Flues can be fireplace, wood stove, or furnace flues, and all of them are swept in one visit.
- Open the State menu and choose either “US average” or one of the 50 states or DC. The state you pick adjusts the estimate for local wage levels.
- Read the price range shown in the result. This is your estimated low-to-high cost for the flues and state you chose.
- Check the receipt below the range. It lists the national figures used for comparison and the NFPA 211 note on inspection and cleaning.
- Change the Flues or State settings and watch the range update. Try a few combinations to see how each one affects the cost.
Try the US average first to get a baseline, then switch to your own state to see the difference.
Settings stay in the page address. Use the Copy link button to share the exact estimate or to bookmark it. Use the Print button to print the result. On a phone, wide tables scroll sideways inside their box.
If you have a wood stove and a fireplace on different flues, set the Flues control to the total of both so the estimate covers the whole visit.
How much does a chimney sweep cost?
Thumbtack’s national average range is $201 to $726, and most people pay about $385. The full span in the guide runs from a low of $82 to a high of $1,942, so the typical range is the figure to plan around. For one flue in the US, the calculator estimates $200 to $725. The State menu moves that estimate up or down. California’s median cleaner wage is $20.51 and Texas’s is $14.26, which shows how the state can change the result.
Does a second flue cost more?
Yes. The calculator adds 50% of the first flue’s price for each extra flue swept on the same visit. That 50% is an assumption of the tool, not a figure from Thumbtack’s guide. For two flues in the US, the estimate is $300 to $1,090, compared with $200 to $725 for one flue.
What is the difference between a chimney inspection and a sweep?
NFPA 211, the Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances, says chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year and cleaned when needed. An inspection checks the system, while a sweep removes buildup from the flue. Hourly quotes can be harder to compare with the estimate, so ask for the expected total as well. The CSIA describes inspection levels 1, 2 and 3. The calculator does not price those levels, so ask the company which level it means before you compare quotes.
Do chimney sweeps charge by the hour?
Some do. Thumbtack’s guide reports that sweeps who charge by the hour average about $125 per hour. Ask whether a quote is a flat price or an hourly rate before you book, and ask how long the visit is expected to take. A flat price makes the total easier to compare with the calculator’s range, while an hourly rate depends on how the visit goes.
How does the state change a chimney sweep price?
The State menu adjusts the estimate using the state’s median cleaner wage, divided by the national median of $17.07 per hour. Only the labor share of the price, assumed at 60%, moves with wages. New York’s median of $20.17 sits close to California’s $20.51, while Mississippi’s $12.19 is the lowest of the examples in the guide. Compare the US average with your state before you decide whether a quote is typical.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a chimney be cleaned?
NFPA 211 says the chimney shall be inspected at least once a year and cleaned when needed. The calculator does not set an interval, so the inspection result decides whether a cleaning is due. Ask the sweep to note any buildup it found.
What should I ask a sweep before booking?
Ask which flues are included in the price, whether the quote is flat or hourly, and whether the inspection is part of the visit. Ask the sweep to describe any buildup it finds and what it recommends next. Get the answers in writing so you can compare them with the estimate. A clear list makes it easier to compare two sweeps side by side.
Why might my quote be higher than the estimate?
The calculator gives a range based on national data and your state’s wage level. A sweep’s quote depends on its own prices, how easy the flue is to reach, and what it finds during the visit. Use the estimate to compare quotes, not to replace them. Ask the sweep to explain each line of its price.
Is creosote a fire risk?
Creosote builds up from burning wood, and it is a fire risk. That is general knowledge, not a figure from the tool. A sweep removes the buildup, and the inspection shows how much has formed since the last visit.
Is anything I enter sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded. Settings stay in the page address, and no account or sign-up is needed.
