The gutter cleaning cost calculator estimates what clearing your gutters is likely to cost. You can price the job from your home’s square footage and number of stories, or from the length of gutter in linear feet. Thumbtack’s public cost guide puts typical US prices at $163 to $333, with most people paying about $233. The tool is free, runs in your browser, and needs no account or sign-up. Use it to set a budget before you call a gutter company, or to test a quote against a national figure. The result is an estimate, not a local price, and the company’s written quote is what you will pay.

The estimate works for both a home-size quote and a per-foot quote, so you can check whichever figure a company gives you.

How to use the gutter cleaning cost calculator

  1. In the “Price by” menu, choose Home size or Linear feet.
  2. In Home size mode, type your home’s square footage into Home size (sq ft). The default is 2,000 sq ft.
  3. Open the Stories menu and choose One, Two or Three.
  4. Open the State menu and choose your state, or leave “US average” selected if you are not sure.
  5. In Linear feet mode, enter your total gutter run in Gutter length (ft).
  6. Check Price per foot ($). It defaults to $1.25, which is one professional’s rate. Change it if you have a different rate to compare.
  7. Read the price range, then check the receipt, which lists the national figures the estimate is built on.

The table by home size shows where your home falls among Thumbtack’s bands. In Linear feet mode, the estimate is your gutter length multiplied by the price per foot, so the result changes in a straight line as you adjust either number.

Your settings are kept in the page address, so press Copy link to share the exact estimate or to bookmark it. Press Print to print the result. The page works on phones, and wide tables scroll sideways inside their box.

If a company quotes per linear foot, multiply your gutter length by its rate and compare the result with the linear-feet estimate. If it quotes by home size, use Home size mode with the same Stories setting so the two numbers are comparable.

How much does gutter cleaning cost?

Thumbtack’s guide puts the typical US range at $163 to $333, and most people pay about $233. Prices rise with home size: up to 1,000 sq ft is $125 to $225, 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft is $175 to $300, and 4,000 to 5,000 sq ft is $240 to $400. Per square foot of home, the typical range is $0.09 to $0.12. The calculator uses these bands, so a 2,000 sq ft home on one story gets an estimate of $160 to $275.

How much is gutter cleaning per linear foot?

Linear-foot pricing starts from one professional’s rate of $1.25 per linear foot, which is the default in the Price per foot ($) box. That figure is one company’s rate, not a national average, so change it when you have a different quote. For a 150-foot run at $1.25, the estimate is $188. Thumbtack’s guide lists reconnecting a downspout at $10 to $40. The calculator does not price that job, so ask the company whether it is included in the quote.

Does a two-story house cost more?

Yes. Thumbtack’s guide puts one-story homes at $135 to $250 and two-story homes at $160 to $300. The calculator treats a one-story house as a factor of 0.91 and a two-story house as 1.09, which makes the two-story price about 20% higher. A 2,500 sq ft two-story home comes to $190 to $325 in the tool. Three stories are not in Thumbtack’s guide, so the calculator sets them at two stories times 1.15, which is an assumption of the tool.

What does the per-square-foot figure mean?

Thumbtack’s guide expresses the typical price as $0.09 to $0.12 per square foot of home. Companies at the high end charge $0.15 to $0.22 per square foot, and those at the low end charge $0.06 to $0.08. Multiply your square footage by a figure in one of these bands to check a quote. For a 2,000 sq ft home, the typical band gives about $180 to $240, which sits close to the calculator’s range of $160 to $275 for a one-story home of that size. The per-square-foot figure is a shortcut, not a rule, so use it only as a check on a quote.

Frequently asked questions

How often should gutters be cleaned?

Most guides suggest cleaning gutters at least twice a year, in spring and fall. Homes under trees may need it more often. Use that schedule as a starting point, and check the gutters after a heavy season of leaves.

Is gutter cleaning worth paying someone to do?

The calculator gives a price, not a recommendation. Gutter work at height carries a fall risk, so many homeowners weigh the cost against their own comfort on a ladder. Ask a company how it reaches the gutters and what it does with the debris.

Should I tip a gutter cleaner?

One professional quoted in Thumbtack’s guide says satisfied customers usually tip 10%. Tipping is a personal choice, and the calculator does not add a tip to its estimate. Use the quoted figure only as one reference point.

Does the price include reconnecting a downspout?

The calculator does not price downspout reconnection. Thumbtack’s guide lists that work at $10 to $40. Ask the company whether it is in its quote, so the final figure is not a surprise.

How does the State menu change the estimate?

The tool uses the state’s median cleaner wage from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, divided by the national median of $17.07 per hour. Only the labor share of the price, assumed at 60%, moves with wages. California’s median of $20.51 pushes the estimate up, and Mississippi’s median of $12.19 pulls it down.

How do I compare a quote with the estimate?

Enter your home size and story count, then set the estimate beside the company’s total. A quote well above the range is worth asking about, and so is one well below it, since the reason may be the scope of the work. Ask what is included before you choose.
