House cleaning rates per hour run about $36 to $48 per cleaner-hour at US-average company rates, and this calculator shows the range for your state from US wage data for maids and housekeeping cleaners. Pick a state, the hours per cleaner, and the number of cleaners, and it shows the typical company rate per cleaner-hour, the total price, and a table covering all 50 states and DC. The tool is free, runs in your browser, and needs no account or sign-up.

It is useful when you are comparing hourly quotes, or when you want to see how wages differ from one state to another. The page starts with US averages, 3 hours and 2 cleaners, so you can get a result without entering anything. Rates vary a lot by location. The company rates are estimated from local wages rather than published by cleaning companies, so check your state’s figure before you compare quotes.

How to use the house cleaning rates per hour calculator

  1. Choose a state from the State control. The default is the US average.
  2. Enter the Hours per cleaner. The default is 3.
  3. Set the Cleaners number. The default is 2.
  4. Read the typical company rate per cleaner-hour for your state. It appears as a range.
  5. Check the BLS median wage shown next to it, so you can see what cleaners earn before the markup.
  6. Read the total price for hours x cleaners. With the defaults, that is 3 hours x 2 cleaners, or 6 cleaner-hours.
  7. Scroll to the state table to compare all 50 states and DC. On a phone, the wide table scrolls sideways inside its box.

Read the result as a range. The low and high ends both come from the company rate for your state, so a higher hour count moves the whole range up. Change the hours or the cleaners one at a time to see how each one changes the total.

The state table has one row for each state and DC, with the median wage and the estimated company rate. Find your state there and check that its company rate matches the range you saw in the result.

Your settings stay in the page address, so the Copy link button shares or bookmarks the exact estimate you are looking at. The Print button prints the result.

How much do house cleaners charge per hour?

In the US, the estimated typical company rate is $36.48 to $47.58 per cleaner-hour, with a midpoint of $42.67. This is an estimate the tool makes from cleaner wages, not a published price. The rate changes by state. California is about $44 to $57 per cleaner-hour, and Texas is about $30 to $40. A single company’s quote can sit outside these figures, so use the range as a benchmark.

How much do house cleaners make an hour?

The BLS median wage for maids and housekeeping cleaners is $17.07 an hour, based on May 2025 data for 860,670 people employed. The middle half of cleaners earn between $14.59 (25th percentile) and $19.03 (75th percentile), and the top 10% earn at least $23.35. Wages differ by state. Hawaii has the highest median at $24.81, and Mississippi has the lowest at $12.19. These are wages, so they leave out the company costs that the markup covers.

Why does a cleaning company charge more than the cleaner earns?

The tool estimates a company rate by multiplying the cleaner’s wage by 2.5. That markup is our estimate. It pays for costs the cleaner’s wage does not cover, such as payroll taxes, insurance, travel time between jobs, supplies, overhead and profit. Independent cleaners often charge less because they carry fewer of these costs, while agencies in big cities often charge more.

Is it cheaper to pay a cleaner by the hour or a flat rate?

Neither option is always cheaper. Hourly pricing charges you for the time worked, which makes the bill easy to compare but harder to predict if the job runs long. A flat rate fixes the total in advance, so it costs less than hourly when the job takes longer than expected and more when it goes quickly. To compare, multiply the expected hours by the number of cleaners and check the total against the tool’s price range.

Window cleaners on Thumbtack average $50 an hour, with a low of $25 and a high of $100. That figure belongs to a related trade, so use it only as a rough reference.

How many hours does it take to clean a house?

The tool does not predict how long a job will take, so you enter the hours yourself. The default is 3 hours per cleaner. Total cleaner-hours equal hours x cleaners, so 3 hours with 2 cleaners is 6 cleaner-hours. At US-average rates, that comes to $219 to $285. Ask your cleaner how many hours they expect, then try a few values to see the range.

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator free to use?

Yes. The tool is free, runs in your browser, and needs no account or sign-up. Nothing you type is uploaded, so the hours and state you enter are not sent anywhere.

Are these prices what cleaners will actually quote?

No. The company rates are estimates based on wage data, not quotes from specific businesses. Use them as a planning figure, then compare quotes from local cleaners.

How do I compare the estimate with a real quote?

Divide the quote by the cleaner-hours (hours x cleaners) to get a price per cleaner-hour. For example, a quote of $300 for 6 cleaner-hours works out to $50 per cleaner-hour, which is above the US-average range of $36.48 to $47.58. Then check whether that figure falls inside your state’s range on the calculator.

Does the state I choose change the rate I see?

Yes. The state menu lists US average plus all 50 states and DC. Each state’s row in the table shows its median wage and its estimated company rate, so the rate you see follows the state you pick. The state changes the company rate, not the hours you enter.

Can I share or save my estimate?

You can share or bookmark an estimate with the Copy link button, since settings are kept in the page address. Saving estimates is coming soon and is not available yet.

Does the tool work on a phone?

Yes. The layout works on phones, and wide tables scroll sideways inside their box. Use Copy link to send the same settings to someone else, so they see the same figures.
