This rug cleaning cost calculator estimates what it costs to clean area rugs based on rug size, stain and odor treatment, and your state. It is free, runs in your browser, and needs no account or sign-up. Each rug gets its own line in the result, and those lines add up to a total price range.

The estimate uses national prices from Thumbtack’s public rug cleaning cost guide, updated March 31, 2026, so you can see a typical rug cleaning price before you ask local cleaners for quotes. The page starts with one 6x10 rug. Use Add a rug to add more. Nothing you type is uploaded. Treat the result as a planning number, since final prices depend on each rug and the provider you choose.

How to use the rug cleaning cost calculator

  1. In the first row, open the Rug size menu and choose a size: 2x4, 3x5, 4x8, 6x10 ft, 3, 6, 8 or 12 ft round, or Other size. The tool starts with one 6x10 rug.
  2. If you choose Other size, enter the Width or diameter and the Length. For a round rug, enter 0 as the length.
  3. Select Add a rug for each additional rug. Select Remove to delete a row you do not need.
  4. For any rug that needs it, use the Stain removal (each rug) and Odor removal (each rug) boxes.
  5. Open the State menu and pick your state, or keep US average.
  6. Read the total price range, then check the line for each rug.
  7. Scroll to the size table and the per-square-foot note if you want to see how the price was built.

Read the total first, then the line for each rug. Each line shows that rug’s size and price, so you can see which rug drives the total. Use this to decide whether a large rug is worth a full clean or whether a smaller one needs only a spot treatment.

Your settings are kept in the page address. Select Copy link to share or bookmark the exact estimate, or select Print to print the result. The page also works on phones. On a small screen, wide tables scroll sideways inside their box.

How much does it cost to clean an 8x10 rug?

A standard 8x10 rug costs at least $100 on average in Thumbtack’s national data. In this tool, a custom 8x10 ranges from $100 to $400.

8x10 is not a preset size, so choose Other size and enter 8 for width and 10 for length. The tool multiplies area by a rate: 8 × 10 = 80 square feet. At $1.25 per square foot, that is $100. At $5.00, it is $400.

How much is rug cleaning per square foot?

Per square foot, one company’s examples are $1.50 for synthetic rugs, $2.00 for wool or cotton, and $3.00 for silk or Navajo wool. For other sizes, this tool uses a rate between $1.25 and $5.00 per square foot.

To estimate a rug yourself, multiply width by length to get square feet, then multiply by a rate. A 5x8 rug has 40 square feet, so it costs $50 at $1.25 per square foot and $200 at $5.00. Those results match the 5x8 custom range in the tool.

Do wool and silk rugs cost more to clean?

Yes, based on the per-square-foot examples. Using the same 8x10 rug (80 square feet), a synthetic rug would cost $120 at $1.50, wool or cotton $160 at $2.00, and silk or Navajo wool $240 at $3.00. These are examples from one company, so a real quote may differ. Material changes the rate per square foot, so it affects the price even when two rugs are the same size.

Is in-home rug cleaning cheaper than taking it to a shop?

The data behind this tool does not compare in-home cleaning with shop cleaning, so the tool cannot say which one costs less. Its estimate is a service price adjusted for your state. Before you choose, ask each provider for a quote that lists pickup, delivery and any travel fees, then compare the totals.

Does my state change rug cleaning prices?

Yes. The State menu scales the estimate by the median wage for cleaners in your state, using US Bureau of Labor Statistics data from May 2025. That wage is divided by the national median of $17.07 per hour. For specialty services such as rug cleaning, only the labor share of the price moves with wages. That share is assumed to be 60%. A state with a lower median wage, such as Mississippi at $12.19 per hour, gives a lower estimate. California at $20.51 per hour gives a higher one. The result is an estimate, not a local quote.

Frequently asked questions

How often should area rugs be cleaned?

The tool does not suggest a schedule, and the cost data does not cover how often rugs need cleaning. As a general habit, vacuum regularly, blot spills right away, and book a professional cleaning when a rug looks dull or dirty, or when odors or stains remain.

What is a typical rug cleaning price?

Thumbtack’s national data shows a typical range of $115 to $240, with most people paying about $166. Reported prices ran from $69 at the low end to $405 at the high end. These figures come from jobs and quotes on that platform, so use them as a guide.

Do stain and odor removal add to the price?

Yes. Thumbtack’s national figures put stain removal at $10 to $40 per rug, and odor removal at $15 to $30 per rug. The boxes are labeled each rug, so tick them only for the rugs that need the treatment.

What if my rug is not a standard size?

Choose Other size and enter the Width or diameter and the Length. Other sizes use a rate of $1.25 to $5.00 per square foot, so a custom 5x8 rug is $50 to $200 and a custom 8x10 rug is $100 to $400.

Why does my estimate differ from a provider’s quote?

This tool uses national price data and a state adjustment, not quotes from local cleaners. Providers set prices based on their own costs, the rug’s fiber and condition, and any extra work. Get at least two written quotes before you book.

Can I save my estimate?

Not yet. A note under the tool says saving estimates and branded quotes are coming soon. For now, use Copy link to keep the exact estimate, or use Print to print the result.
